contributed by www.hartgardens.co.uk

NOVEMBER

FRUIT

·         Complete picking of all but the very late apples and pears.

·         Ventilate the fruit store at night to bring down temperature.

·         Ensure the fruit cage is closed and the netting is in good order.

·         Plant new trees and bushes as soon as possible and prune after planting.

·         Root prune over vigorous trees after leaf fall.

·         Immediately after leaf fall prune established apples and pears.

·         Complete pruning blackberries and hybrid berries.

·         Complete pruning of raspberries, check supports and wires and ensure canes are securely tied.

·         Prune currants and gooseberries, take cuttings from healthy bushes.

·         Weed strawberries, remove runners. Remove old and dead foliage from perpetuals.

·         In cold districts loosely bundle the new canes of blackberries and hybrid berries together and tie to a wire for winter protection.

·         Inspect apples and pears for canker and treat- spray severely infected trees according to manufacturer’s instructions.

·         Spray peaches and nectarines against peach leaf curl just before leaf fall if not already done.

LAWNS

·         If weather is mild and dry then set blades of the mower high and cut the lawn occasionally.

·         Clear away leaves from lawns.

·         Brush away worm casts.

·         Good month for laying turf.

The above helpful advice has been reproduced by kind permission of Will Hart, whose experience includes working for Blackburn Rovers FC (as a groundsman at their Training Ground, Academy and Ewood Park), for the Sultan of Oman (at his French residence in Fontainebleau, south of Paris) at the 1999 Martell Grand National at Aintree and for a variety of different sized local gardens and estates.  Impressive credentials I am sure you will agree!
